About this itinerary

2 days and 3 nights is just enough time to get a feel for Okumikawa and see some the major sights. With an itinerary like this you can experience some of what we have to offer, and like some of our guests, after an introduction like this you might have to come back another time to see more!

This model itinerary is not a package tour, but we can offer it as a package tour if you like. Using the link below you can request this itinerary as-is, or you can add the individual parts to your cart, checking out when you've gathered everything you like from what we have in Okumikawa.

Explore Yuyaonsen

The Yuyaonsen area has some beautiful natural sights along the Ure River. A stroll along the river is a great way to relax after chaos in the large cities of Japan.

Accommodation at Hoo! Hoo! Guesthouse, with sake tasting session and delivery bento dinner (package tour only)

This guesthouse blends modern conveniences with Japanese charm, and it's a popular place for our guests. With two private onsen baths, both with river views, you can really relax as you soak.

A light breakfast is included at Hoo! Hoo! Guesthouse, so for dinner (only on a package tour) we can deliver bento from an incredibly popular restaurant specialising in high quality meat. After dinner, on a package tour or not, try our local sake at a sake tasting session at the guesthouse's bar with the friendly owner (who speaks English).

Day 2

On your second day, experience the spiritual and cultural history of Mt. Horaiji (and the spiritual experience of climbing the 1,425 steps), with an afternoon experience in the area. Relax with accommodation in a traditional ryokan inn, with traditional meals included with local tastes.

Morning tour at Mt. Horaiji, scaling the 1,425 stone steps

After strolling through the main temple street, we'll climb the 1,425 hand carved stone steps towards the main temple building. As we go we'll share the incredible legends and history of the mountain, and introduce you to the mountain monk (Yamabushi) culture that is so important to Mt. Horaiji.

After seeing the view and exploring the main temple building and Toshogu Shrine, where the most powerful samurai in Japan's history is enshrined, we'll head back down the steps for lunch.

Guided experience after lunch

After lunch we recommend an experience nearby, like a Yamabushi horn experience, a green tea ceremony at the old school at Mt. Horaiji, or a tea farm visit with tea tasting session.

Many of our experiences are exclusive to our guided tours, because we work with locals that love to share their knowledge and passion!

Accommodation and meals at a traditional ryokan in the area

Experience even more of Japanese culture by staying at a traditional ryokan inn at Yuyaonsen, or even at the base of the stone steps at Mt. Horaiji!

Ryokan serve dinners and breakfasts so you don't need to worry about food, and the atmosphere of our local ryokan is incredible. We also have a range of luxury to simple options.

Day 3

On the final day, after enjoying the traditional ryokan breakfast, see some real Japanese countryside and one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls with us on a guided tour. Leave from Yuyaonsen around 12pm to continue your journey.

Morning guided tour of Atera Village and Atera Nanataki waterfalls

Before leaving the area, get a feel for countryside life in a stunning mountain village (where we live). On a guided tour we can show you what makes the countryside so special as we stroll through the village on the way to the waterfalls.

Atera Nanataki waterfalls have over 1,000 years of history with our village and they're a popular spot to relax and take in the beauty of the forest and falls. This tour is like our regular Atera Countryside Life Tour but with fewer activities for the sake of time.
