About this itinerary
Go deeper than what you can get at shrines and temples in the cities! On this model itinerary you can get a feel for Japanese Buddhism, Shinto, and the mysterious mountain monk spirituality that blends the two (and more). This model itinerary is a more flexible version of one of our package tours, making it possible to run at more times throughout the year.
This model itinerary is not a package tour, but we can use it as the basis of a custom-order package tour. Using the links below you can request this itinerary as-is or see our set package tour. To customise an itinerary, you can add the individual parts to your cart on this page, checking out when you've gathered everything you like from what we have in Okumikawa.
Day 1
Arrive and relax around the river and accommodation. Enjoy the onsen (hot springs) with the sound of the river flowing by.

Arrive in Okumikawa at Yuyaonsen Station (Aichi Prefecture)
Find us between Tokyo and Nagoya, just off the Tokaido Shinkansen. Transfer at Toyohashi Station for the JR Iida Line. From Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka roughly 2-4 hours by train.

Explore Yuyaonsen
The Yuyaonsen area has some beautiful natural sights along the Ure River. A stroll along the river is a great way to relax after chaos in the large cities of Japan.

Accommodation at Hoo! Hoo! Guesthouse
This guesthouse blends modern conveniences with Japanese charm, and it's a popular place for our guests. With two private onsen baths, both with river views, you can really relax as you soak.
A light breakfast is included at Hoo! Hoo! Guesthouse, so for dinner there are a few options within a walk or bike ride away for you to decide on.
Day 2
With a day full of hands-on experiences, you'll prepare for the climb on the 3rd day and pick up some of the more subtle parts of Japanese mountain culture and spirituality on the way.

Travel North to Toei Town
Using some incredibly quaint public transport, travel deeper into the mountains for the morning. The JR Iida line will take you through dramatic valleys and tunnels, and a local taxi will drive you to a small village for an experience.

Waraji rice grass sandal making workshop
With one of the few people in the area that can make these practical pieces of tradition, we'll work on traditional rice grass sandals commonly used in ceremonies (but we'll use them to climb Mt. Horaiji the old-fashioned way the next day). Seeing as we aren't all rice grass experts, making sandals from scratch that would survive the climb could take days, so we will start with some partly-made sandals that we will finish off. We'll also have the chance to make some rice grass rope and try some of the hard parts of the process.
We'll enjoy bento lunch after finishing our waraji sandals.

Travel to Mt. Horaiji's main temple street
With transport depending on how many are in the group, we'll travel to the charming main temple street at Mt. Horaiji.

Mountain monk (Yamabushi) horn experience
At this experience we'll meet a group of Yamabushi (mountain monks) that practice at Mt. Horaiji. We'll make our own bamboo horns and even try playing a real conch shell horn.
With the friendly Yamabushi you'll get even more of a feel for Japanese spirituality.
This experience is available only when some of the Yamabushi are available, so it's best to book well in advance.

Inkstone master craftsman experience
As a temple mountain, Mt. Horaiji has a long history with calligraphy and inkstones. We'll visit one of the few remaining inkstone craftsmen in Japan, hear about the history of Mt. Horaiji and its connection to inkstones, and get the opportunity to use a high-quality inkstone with solid ink the traditional way.

Accommodation and dinner at Unryuso Ryokan
(Unryuso is to the right in the picture, behind the lush trees and next to a temple)
Right at the base of Mt. Horaiji's stone steps, Unryuso is the perfect place to relax and be ready for the climb the next day. Unryuso has great traditional style, and the meals are incredible, some even using wild boar in hot pot (in Winter) and mountain vegetables (in Spring).
Day 3
This is the big day! We'll climb Mt. Horaiji the old-fashioned way, something that turns tourists into legends.

Climb Mt. Horaiji's 1,425 stone steps in hand-made waraji sandals
After breakfast at Unryuso, check out and we'll meet for the day's tour.
We'll make the traditional climb at Mt. Horaiji even more traditional by doing it in our hand-made rice grass sandals. Climbing this way turns an already special climb into a truly unforgettable experience.
On request, we can also organise shakyo (sutra copying calligraphy) and special entry into the temple and Toshogu Shrine as part of the guided tour.
For lunch we'll enjoy bento at the top of the steps.

Accommodation at Hoo! Hoo! Guesthouse, with bento dinner
Depending on timing and how much we want to hike, we'll return to Yuyaonsen on foot or by bus.
Staying at Hoo! Hoo! Guesthouse again, you can recover from the climb in the amazing onsen baths.
For dinner we can organise bento from a local and incredibly popular restaurant, or leave it to you.
Day 4

Check out and relax in Yuyaonsen
After breakfast at Hoo! Hoo! Guesthouse, check out and spend some time relaxing around the area before taking the train from Yuyaonsen Station to continue your journey in Japan.
